About the Item

Antique Victorian Satin / Opaline Glass Biscuit Jar with Hand-Painted Floral Décor and Silverplate Lid, Late 19th Century A charming and finely crafted Victorian satin or opaline glass biscuit jar featuring delicate hand-painted floral decoration and a beautifully detailed silverplate lid. The lid is topped with a wonderfully characterful gnome or dwarf finial—an unusual and whimsical feature that elevates this piece from a functional household object to a true collector’s delight. A maker’s mark is present on the lid, as shown in the photos. Based on the form, coloration, and style of decoration, the glass is likely of Italian or French origin; however, no identifying marks are present on the glass itself to confirm the exact maker. The jar displays the elegant opaline glow and soft surface finish typical of high-quality late 19th-century European production. Condition: Excellent antique condition for its age. No chips or cracks to the glass; minimal age-related wear to the painted decoration and silverplate consistent with gentle use. Found at an estate sale in Vienna, Austria. A wonderful addition to any collection of Victorian glass, decorative objects, or whimsical European curiosities.
