About the Item

Gold and enamel Murano glass amphora, Antonio Salviati manufacture, second half of the 19th century. In 1859 at the headquarters in Dorsoduro, Venice at number 731 the firm "Salviati Dott. Antonio fu Bartolomeo." Thus began the entrepreneurial journey of Vicenza lawyer Antonio Salviati, who, enamored with the precious mosaics of St. Mark's Basilica and fascinated by the art of Murano glassmaking, decided to start the production of mosaics and Murano glassware. Pushing him along this path was an ambitious and far-sighted goal: to revive the fortunes of Murano's glassmaking art that had been decaying for decades. The first major recognition came in 1864, during the "First Glassmaking Exhibition." The monumental mosaic presented by Salviati not only won an award higher than the gold medal, but also opened the doors of international markets for the brand. Before long, Salviati C. diversified its production by counting glasses, cups, amphorae, and cruets that guaranteed first prize at the universal expositions for three consecutive years. His great passion for mosaics is also reflected in the art of glassmaking: he produces ornamental and table glass in neo-Renaissance taste, decorated with gold and colored enamels and embellished with fantastic animals such as dragons and winged horses. The greatest glassmakers work in his company, including the Barovier family. When Antonio Salviati died in 1890, he was considered the main architect of the revival of the Venetian glass industry. Salviati executed glass mosaics in almost every major European city. In France, he did the large glass mosaic decorations in the Paris Opera House, in the apse of the Pantheon in Paris, and in the church of Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille. Our amphora is of excellent quality, fully decorated with green and red enamels with white dots and gold trim. The handle, made of blown glass with inclusions of golden straws, is shaped like a dragon. What is striking is the incredible lightness of its weight. Measurements H cm 28 L max cm 12 D base cm 10
