About the Item

Ovoid copper vessel on a round, grooved base with a short, narrow neck, coated in silvery turquoise, yellow, pink, and burgundy red, and decorated with partially pasty, translucent enamel in the form of clusters of flowers (pink primroses), marked in gold 'C. FAURÉ LIMOGES FRANCE.' painted on the wall near the base. See Model/form 'Primrose', documented in: Cork Marcheschi, Camille Fauré: Impossible Objects, Umbra Books, 2007, page 134. Manufactory: Camille Fauré, Limoges, France Camille Fauré (1874–1956) was a French enamel artist, best known for his designs for the Limoges porcelain factory in Limoges. Floral and figurative motifs in rich glaze colors were his trademark. He was born in Périgueux, where he began his apprenticeship. At the turn of the century, he sold his creations in Paris in a shop where he also made and exhibited vases, bowls, ashtrays, boxes, and other items. In 1919, he joined Alexandre Marty (1876–1943) to develop new production methods using flamed/matt enamel. Together, they designed and exhibited various pieces under the brand name ‘Fauré et Marty’, including a small number of pendants made of enamelled gold, silver and copper. The two parted ways in early 1925. The 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts was Fauré's breakthrough. He became the most famous enamel artist in Limoges. In 1925, Fauré opened his own shop in Limoges, where he hired five namellers, whom he granted creative freedom. The works were signed with the trademark ‘C. Fauré Limoges’. After his death in 1956, his daughter Andreé Faure continued the business. The C. Fauré Limoges manufactory existed until 1985.
