About the Item
Collection of Four John Held Jr. Hand-Painted Art Deco Cocktail Plates, Signed and Dated 1932
A remarkable and exceptionally rare set of four hand-painted glass cocktail plates designed and signed by John Held Jr., dated 1932. Each plate is crafted from clear glass and decorated with a vivid Art Deco palette of red, green, yellow, and black painted banding around the rim, centering a whimsical painted figure, each a perfect embodiment of Held’s iconic Jazz Age style.
The four scenes include:
“Looking at You”: A stylish woman in profile wearing a peach gown, raising her cocktail glass.
“Hoo Rah": A cheerful man and woman clinking glasses in celebration.
“Hacha-Cha”: A woman in a green gown and pearls holding a cocktail shaker.
“On the House”: A bartender presenting a liquor bottle and three shot glasses.
These plates capture the spirited sophistication and humor of the early 1930s cocktail era. Held’s distinctive figures, with their elongated limbs, elegant gestures, and tongue-in-cheek wit — helped define the visual language of the Jazz Age. His work appeared in Vanity Fair, Life, and The New Yorker, and he remains one of the most recognizable illustrators of the Roaring Twenties and early Art Deco period.
While John Held Jr. is celebrated for his illustrations, his painted glass and barware pieces are extraordinarily scarce, produced in very limited quantities and rarely surviving in such fine condition. His novelty silk scarves, trays, and serving ware are highly sought after by collectors and museums alike. Comparable examples of these plates do not appear to have surfaced on the market, underscoring their rarity and desirability.
Condition: Excellent. The plates appear unused, with only the most minor and expected paint losses to the enamel banding along the rims. The colors remain vibrant and the surfaces pristine.
A museum-worthy collection that embodies the glamour, humor, and elegance of America’s Jazz Age through the hand of one of its most iconic artists.
* Images are taken on white canvas and the texture of the canvas is visible through the plates.
