About the Item
A stunning small Saint Louis two colour glass cameo vase in an unusual colourway of brown over yellow - that looks great in sunlight - It is signed D'Argental in cameo (see image) and was made by Paul Nicolas dating to around 1920. It is part of his rare and important castles series. Three castle are visible on a ridge with a small village, meadows and a river below. As with the best examples this is clearly marked in cameo 'Les Trois Chateaux Eguisheim' -see images. They are a famous group of French castles still existing today (we have added a picture of them now -taken from a similar angle) Nicolas' Castle vases are rare and possibly his most important series
Paul Nicolas -one time apprentice and ultimately Chief Designer at Emile Galle (until 1919) - left employment there and went to work for St Louis taking a small team of workers to make the D'Argental cameo range. These vases were unusually made of Crystal rather than the Demi-Crystal employed by Galle helping make the fine detail in their vases of exceptionally high quality
