About the Item
This finely preserved Gallo-Roman glass jar dates to the mid-1st to mid-2nd century AD and represents a superb example of early Roman glassblowing. Crafted from translucent green glass, the jar features a rounded, globular body tapering to a narrow base, with vertical ribs extending from the shoulder to the lower section. The wide cylindrical neck is finished with a thick, folded rim.
This jar was created using the innovative glassblowing techniques that developed in the Roman world during the 1st century BC. After the initial blowing of the glass, the ribs were created either through the use of a ribbed mould, or hand tooling, before the vessel was gently twisted to produce a subtle spiral effect. In antiquity, vessels of this type were used to store oils, perfumes and other valuable substances. They were also used in ritual contexts, as cinerary or offering vessels. While functional in purpose, they also conveyed status and refinement, reflecting the technological sophistication of Roman craftsmanship.
Displayed on a coffee table or book shelf, the vessel’s translucent green glass catches the light, making it an elegant and timeless display piece.
