About the Item

Excellent early Art Nouveau cup-shaped vase: Conical body pressed into an oval cross-section on a bell-shaped, curved round base, colorless thick-walled glass with milky white opalescent, yellow, and carnelian-colored overlay and inclusions, etched decoration combined with colored, opaque enamel painting of stylized ornaments and floral motifs on the upper rim, in the lower third of the vessel and on the foot, partly etched and enamel-painted in relief wild orchids and bee. Needle-etched flower-signature ‘Cristallerie de Gallé, à Nancy, Modèle et décor déposés’ (model and decoration protected) on the underside. Hand-made Cameo Glass: Glass overlaid with several layers, with high-cut worked out motifs. Since the middle of the 19th century, the design has also been done by etching. Cameo glass vessels were already being made in antiquity; at the end of the 19th century, Émile Gallé further developed this glass art, created Art Nouveau designs and employed a large factory in Nancy.
