About the Item

This vibrant, exquisitely well-preserved piece of Roman glassware, with a gently flared lip and cone-shaped foot, was hand blown 2000 years ago. Its maker, evidently an artisan of particular skill and patience, has achieved a beautiful semi-translucent turquoise hue across the whole cup. It is a particularly fine example of the heights achieved in the glassmaking of the Roman Empire - a period of dynamic artistic development, ushered in by the advent of glass-blowing technology in the 1st Century AD. Thanks to the quality of the pieces produced in the Roman workshops, glassware became one of the Empire’s most valued exports, with pieces such as this one traded far beyond the Mediterranean world, with similar examples have even been discovered as far afield as Eastern China. This particular cup comes from the collection of Louis-Gabriel Bellon (1819-1899), who assembled one of the most important private collections of antiquities in 19th century France. Made of an exquisite, translucent material, it particularly comes to life when spot lit or in natural sunlight. Provenance: Collection of Louis-Gabriel Bellon (1819-1899), Saint-Nicolas-lez-Arras and Rouen Thence by descent. Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs. Fossilised Wood with Blue-Green Highlights
Located in London, GB
This striking fossilised wood cross-section, dating to the Miocene epoch (23-5 million years ago) and featuring paint-like streaks of greens, blues and browns, is a beautiful natural history specimen and impactful display piece. This is a magnificent example of the results of permineralisation, a process through which buried wood tissue, permeated by minerals transported in water, can transform into vibrant fossils. This particular example has fossilised over a copper deposit, resulting in the bright inclusions of copper minerals that manifest as impressive streaks of blue, green and red. This distinctive colouration is unique to Colla wood...
