About the Item

An exceptional intricately, cut to clear, bowl by Saint Louis - Rarely this bowl has a sulphide to the front depicting a courtier. The bowl is cases in blue and finely cut to clear to generate a pattern of lines and small roundels. The lower parts of the sides of the bowl are decorated with inverted tear like shapes -these are exceptionally hard to cut precisely. Sulphides (also known as Cameo Incrustations) are opaque, usually white, medallions or figurines encased in glass and usually used to decorate clear glass objects. They can most often be found in paperweights but more rarely the were used to decorate bowls, decanters and jugs etc Saint Louis was and still is one of the three great Crystal glassworks the others being Val Saint Lambert and Baccarat.
