About the Item
A beautiful, important and rare set of whisky glasses, entirely hand-painted.
The beautiful subject of the painting refers to the ancient galleons that sailed the seas in centuries past.

The terms ‘Wikinger’ (Viking), “Kogge” (cog) and ‘Hollander’ (Dutch) refer to different types of ships that marked the maritime history of Northern Europe between 900 and 1700.
Evolution and differences
Vikings (around 900 AD): Known for their Drakkars and Knarrs, these were agile, fast, shallow-draft vessels, ideal for raids and river navigation.
Kogge (c. 1100–1200 AD): Developed on the Frisian coast (now the Netherlands), the cog gradually replaced Viking ships. Characterised by a flat bottom and high sides, it was optimised for transporting large loads and became the symbol of the Hanseatic League.
Hollander (Dutch, circa 1700 AD): This represents the next evolution of the large merchant and warships that allowed the Netherlands to dominate global trade.
Archaeological finds in Holland
Holland is home to important finds of this type, including the famous IJsselkogge, a nearly intact 15th-century cog recovered from the IJssel River near Kampen in 2016. This wreck still contained the original galley with a brick oven and glazed tiles, a rarity for medieval ships.
Curiosities and collecting
These three types of ships are often associated with sets of commemorative items, such as decorated beer mugs or whisky glasses, which illustrate the development of navigation through these historical stages.
