Haviland Limoges Porcelain Fleurs Parisiennes Tureen, 1887-1889
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Antique hand painted and hand decorated small tureen by Haviland in the Fleurs Parisiennes pattern on Cannele blank measures 3.1" and 8.5" with 5.4" opening. The back-marks on the bottom are H&C*/Depose underglaze mark, dating back to 1887, and the circular Haviland Limoges decorator/overglaze mark (mark g, according to Haviland's Collectors International Foundation reference sheet) in brown (color indicates premium decor pieces on Haviland porcelain made in that period), dating back to 1879-1889. Cannele blank ("fluted"), influenced by traditional Japanese bowl shape called "kaki" or "chrysanthemum", was one of the new blanks created in 1880-1890s by Haviland's artists at the peak of Japonisme movement, after European artists and artisans become exposed to Japanese art. Cannele was hugely popular at the time and won the Grand Prix of 1889 Paris's World Fair. The Fleurs Parisiennes is one of the less common Haviland patterns...

Table Box portrait of Empress Eugenia de Montijo miniature Salimbeni

Murano 1930, Italian, Technical Avventurina
Located in Ciudad Autónoma Buenos Aires, C
Murano. With silver applications. We have specialized in the sale of Art Deco and Art Nouveau and Vintage styles since 1982. If you have any questions we are at your disposal. Pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'. And you can see more objects to the style for sale. Technical Avventurina : Avventurina is a Murano glass-making technique developed on Murano island in the 17th century. I was first mentioned in a document dating from 1614 as "a kind of stone with gilt stars inside", at which point it already mesmerized people with the unusual and attractive look. The technique owes its name to the fact that its discovery happened by chance thanks to a lucky coincidence, when a glass artisan is said to have accidentally dropped some metal shavings into the glass mixture. Italians say it happened "all'avventura", which in Italian means "by chance". The first documented recipe for the technique dates from 1644, when Murano master glassmaker Giovanni Darduin described how Avventurina glass should be created. The recipe involves adding various metal oxides such as copper and iron to the hot glass mixture, which will cause tiny particles of the metals to crystallize as the glass mixture cools off. Complicating the process, for such crystallization to occur the furnace had to get fully extinguished, and the metal particles would slowly separate from the glass base over a few days during the natural cooling of the glass. This was a very difficult process from a logistical perspective, since every time a glass furnace got extinguished it caused work to be paused, and re-igniting it was quite a big process, as it took time to fully heat it to the desired temperature. As industrial revolution set foot on Murano in the nineteenth century, the process got a remake. Large volumes of fine Avventurina paste were made and then skillfully stretched into glass canes, which were then re-melted for jewelry-making under a small flame, or for glass blowing. This Avventurina paste received worldwide acclaim and re-ignited the fame of Murano Glass workshops due to its use in Salviati mosaics...

Cigarette Case Fired Enamel with Still Life Miniature Sterling Silver Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Rectangular table cigarette case with rounded corners in sterling silver 925/1000 gold plated with beautiful miniature fire enamelled and hand painted by the painter Beatrice Mellana reproducing a "still life" by the Flemish painter Willem Claes Heda. Dimensions cm. 5.7 x 9 x 1.7. Weight gr. 174. Designed by Franco Salimbeni in 1969 and manufactured in Florence in numerous specimens with various subjects and different colors, in the headquarters of the Salimbeni Company with completely manual execution by artisan artists with thick slab and large reinforcements suitable for withstanding numerous enamelled firings at about 800° C. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl. Fire enameled miniatures: On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature colors which are as many colored crystals, ground and reduced to a very fine, almost impalpable powder washed and purified in distilled water with the addition of small quantities of deoxidizing acids which, diluted with essential oils (usually essential oil of solder), can be mixed to form a palette of colors. With very fine sable hair brushes you draw the subject starting from the perimeter and then gradually adding various layers of color. It is necessary to carry out various firings very often so that the colors harden and are not absorbed by the underlying glaze as, during the subsequent firings at 750 ° C, during liquefaction, it would spread irremediably. Hence the need to form the painting a little at a time, cooking it numerous times. Therefore it is necessary to proceed with numerous retouching, often overlapping different colors that only the painter's experience knows. A beautiful miniature needs from 20 to over 50 firings and is finished when the painter deems he does not have to further intervene. Some colors must have darker tones than others because then, by superimposing the transparent enamel placed at the end of the miniature, they fade. This transparent layer, called “fondant” in jargon, must be smoothed and polished like all other translucent enamel colors. The miniatures with water tempera colors are painted on real ivory...
