About the Item
A very fine George III Snuffer Tray
Scissors. The Snuffer Tray made in London in 1782 by Robert Hennell. The Snuffer Scissors made in London in 1786 by John Buckett.
The Snuffer Tray is modelled in a shaped waisted form and the sides are pierced with vertical pails and Neo Classical urns in ovals. The rim is decorated with applied beading and the centre is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, surrounded by an oval bright cut cartouche. The Arms are those of the Flanders family impaling those of the Nott family. The tray is in excellent condition and displays a very crisp set of hallmarks on the reverse.
The Snuffer Scissors are of typical form and the arms are pierced with blue bell motifs. The snuffing box is decorated with beading and bright cutting and the pointed end section is also engraved with bright cutting. The scissors are in excellent condition and are fully marked inside the snuffing box. Snuffer Scissors are always made by a different maker to the tray and were nearly always made by John or William Buckett, who were specialist sprung tong makers.
The Snuffer Scissors would have been used to snuff out the candles and trim the wick. They would have been kept on the snuffer tray when not in use.
