Exceptionally Fine George III Tray Made by Crouch Hannam

The tray is oval in form and stands on four cast reed and scroll panel feet, which are decorated with flat fluting. The rim is decorated with reeding, below a band of flat fluting. The reeded loop side handles are attached to the main body with acanthus mouldings. The main body is beautifully engraved with trailing foliage and flower heads on a scratch engraved ground. The centre of the Tray is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above, all surrounded by a finely executed cartouche of drapery mantling. The tray is in excellent crisp condition and is fully marked on the reverse. Crouch and Hannam were quality, specialist, producers of Salvers and trays. The arms and crest are those of Lane with an inescutcheon of pretense for Tothill. They are specifically those of Thomas Lane Esq, of Bradley, and Coffleet, co. Devon, and his wife Penelope, sole daughter and heiress of Thomas Tothill Esq, of Bagtor, County Devon. Thomas Lane was m agistrate for Devon for upwards of 37 years and was High Sheriff of the county in 1784. He was succeeded by his only son, the Reverend Richard Lane...
