About the Item
A rare and character-rich 1950s silver-plated creamer designed and handcrafted by Wolmar Castillo for the famed Taller de los Ballesteros in Taxco, Guerrero—one of the most important workshops in the history of Mexican silver design.
This sculptural vessel features a bold, angular hammered body contrasted by a whimsical sculpted iguana handle, its curved tail rendered in a beautifully polished green jadeite stone. The iguana’s textured silver head, curled crest, and clawed limbs showcase Castillo’s signature attention to detail and his affinity for blending natural motifs with modernist form.
The piece is stamped with its early and desirable hallmark:
“Wolmar Castillo Silversmiths – Plateado – Taxco Gro.”, as well as the Ballesteros workshop seal, confirming its origin in one of Taxco’s most influential mid-century studios.
About Wolmar Castillo
Taller de los Ballesteros
Wolmar Castillo—part of the renowned Castillo family of silversmiths—created some of the most imaginative mid-century designs to emerge from Taxco, the hub of Mexico’s silver renaissance. His work for Taller de los Ballesteros, founded in 1937, helped shape the studio’s identity as a leader in artisan silver, repoussé work, stone inlay, and sculptural forms.
Pieces combining mixed metals, stone, and playful animal figures—such as this jadeite iguana—are especially sought after by collectors of Mexican modernist silver, mid-century decorative arts, and Taxco’s storied silversmithing tradition.
