About the Item

American Mocha Yellow Ware Jug This antique piece is a mid-19th Century American Mocha Yellow Ware Jug featuring a distinct Puce Seaweed Decoration. The bulbous jug is adorned with continuous bands of brown and white, with a prominent puce (purplish-brown) seaweed design flowing below the spout and across its ridged loop handle. The jug is in good condition, showing no signs of repair or damage. Its dimensions are 6 1/4 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 5 1/2 inches wide. Yellowware Pottery American yellowware pottery is an earthenware named for the yellow hue it derives from the clay used in its production, which contains iron oxide. Originating in the United Kingdom in the late 18th century, its production began in the eastern United States in the late 1820s, first appearing in Ohio and New Jersey. This type of pottery is fired at a lower temperature, resulting in a softer and more porous material that was highly suitable for cooking and serving food because it absorbed heat evenly and was resistant to cracking. Yellowware quickly gained popularity, and by the mid-19th century, which marked its peak, numerous potteries were operating across the United States. These potteries created a wide array of items, including bowls, plates, cups, and jugs, often decorated with simple motifs like flowers, leaves, or geometric patterns, though some featured more elaborate decorations. By the early 20th century, yellowware was largely replaced by durable alternatives like stoneware and porcelain, and today, only a few small potteries continue its production. (Ref: NY98532-iiix)
