About the Item
A very scarce and desirable French Barbotine majolica jug or pitcher, the Orchies factory, circa 1886-1900. Orchies started producing majolica at the end of the 19th century and by the early 1900s produced over twenty molds of humorous majolica jugs featuring animals.
This mold shows a Sheep Dog, dripping wet and climbing his way out of a staved wooden barrel. The base is ringed with tall grasses in varying shades of green. The front end of the dog forms the spout, his fore paws hang over the barrel rim, his mouth is the opening. The dog’s shaggy tail makes the handle. A glazed deep red interior.
Book reference: Majolica Figures – Cunningham, pg. 114.
Measuring 7.5 inches from handle to spout or in this case, nose to tail!
10 inches high with a base diameter of 4 inches.
