The body of this pitcher is decorated with a human face, arms and hands, using black, red and cream colors. The handle is decorated with geometrical patterns
Signed and dated "Frédérique Bourguey 1951"
Rare piece produced before 1953, date of creation of the workshop "Les Argonautes".
Frédérique Bourguet followed the courses of the School of Fine Arts in Montpellier until 1945. Then does an internship with Françoise Bizet in Paris; she then meets Isabelle Ferlay. They created their workshop of the Argonautes in 1953 in Vallauris.
This early production is inspired both for its style and its technique ( engobe) by Picasso ceramic production in Vallauris from 1948 until 1955.
"Engobe" or slip is a liquid earth (slip) composed of finely sieved clay, water and possibly additives such as silica or kaolin. It can be colored using metal oxides, pigments. Unlike enamel, it does not vitrify: its finish remains matte, porous, often velvety. It blends into the earth without forming a separate layer.
