About the Item
Rare early stoneware pitcher "Spaltekande" ("Split-pitcher") by Eva Stæhr-Nielsen at Saxbo stoneware workshop made in the early 1930s. Handmade in stoneware with a red-brown, white and chocolate brown matte glaze. Early Saxbo fire stamp (1931-37) underneath, model no. 64 and Eva Stæhr-Nielsen signature "E.W." (Stæhr-Nielsens maiden name was Eva Wilhjelm, but when she married artist Olaf Stæhr-Nielsen in 1935 she took his surname). The "Spaltekande" pitcher became an iconic piece of Danish design and these early examples (fire stamp) are sought after collectors items.
In the summer of 1932, the potter Eva Stæhr-Nielsen arrived at the then relatively newly established Saxbo Pottery (1929–1968), where she was to do three months of volunteer service. After just two months of work, she began as a permanent employee, marking the beginning of a close collaboration with the founder and manager of Saxbo, the potter and chemical engineer Nathalie Krebs (1895–1978).
Saxbo was the first pottery in Denmark to work exclusively with stoneware. Its early production was characterised by utilitarian pieces in smaller formats with smooth surfaces and matte or semi-matte glazes. As a designer Stæhr-Nielsens masterwork is considered to be the Spaltekande pitcher.
