About the Item

An impressive extra-large water pitcher designed and handcrafted in Taxco, Mexico by Emilia Castillo, one of the most celebrated contemporary designers to emerge from the region’s legendary silversmithing tradition. Crafted in solid brass, copper-plated, and finished with a heavy silver plating, this sculptural pitcher exemplifies Castillo’s signature blend of organic forms, whimsical natural motifs, and extraordinary craftsmanship. The pitcher is adorned with two large butterflies inlaid with natural semiprecious stones in warm, vibrant tones of turquoise, jasper, malachite, and onyx—each section hand-cut and meticulously fitted in true Taxco artisan fashion. Also featured are two verdigris patinated leaf inlays, adding depth, texture, and a naturalistic contrast to the highly polished, hammered silver surface. Emilia Castillo—daughter of Emilia and grandson of Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo, founders of one of Mexico’s most important mid-century silversmithing studios—has continued and expanded her family’s artistic legacy. Her work blends traditional Taxco metalworking techniques with contemporary design, making her pieces highly sought after by collectors and interior designers worldwide. Her nature-inspired themes, combined with mixed-metal and stone inlay craftsmanship, have made her a defining figure in modern Mexican decorative arts. The pitcher retains the Emilia Castillo hallmark, reading: Emilia Castillo, Mexico M.R., TO-85, Plateado, and is also marked #0. Measurements Height: 16.50 in Width (including handle): 12.50 in Depth: 9 in Condition In good vintage condition with mild wear consistent with age and use. Light surface wear and loss to plating on the underside from handling, typical for functional Castillo pieces. Presents beautifully overall. A striking and collectible example of Mexican modern silverwork, ideal for collectors of Emilia Castillo, Taxco silversmithing, or nature-inspired decorative arts. Perfect as a functional server, sculptural centerpiece, or display piece.
