About the Item
A Measham – Bargeware Milk Jug impressed with the saying, “Home Sweet Home”, England, circa 1880.
Finished in a dark brown treacle glaze with enameled, raised and molded geometric, floral and bird applications.
The main panel, seen on the front side of the pitcher reads, “Home Sweet Home” in white script in a red cartouche.
The side panels show large plumed birds glazed in a lilac color.
Lovely shaped handle.
Measham Ware was decorated with floret appliqués and an impressed panel or banner personalized using a printer’s typeface. The pottery, also known as Rockingham or Motto Ware, was produced from the 1870’s by William Mason, a South Derbyshire potter.
Often called ‘barge ware’ because it was extensively marketed through a shop on Measham High Street, located near the canal bridge at Cut End Measham. Passing bargees could order a personalized piece and collect the item on their return journey.

Located in Philadelphia, PA
A rustic hand hammered Brass Milk Jug from Normandy, France, Circa 1850
A large piece of hand made brass used to transport milk from the country dairy to the home, often by donkey.

With the original lid. The lid has a wide collar that sits inside the top of the jug, keeping the contents from spilling during transport. A thick handle is securely attached to the body.
During the early to the mid 1800’s, dairy farmers would transport milk from their farms to the local market where patrons would bring their own containers for filling. The early 1900’s saw the use of milk delivery trucks...
