About the Item

ANTIQUE JUG/PITCHER Designed in 1926 by Danish silversmith and sculptor Christian Fjerdingstad (1891-1968) for high-quality French goldsmiths and silversmiths Christofle, forming part of their Gallia range. Known as the melone jug, a stylish, naturalistic form that was available in either plain or hammered finish metal. This is the hammered finish, and it really does emphasise the naturalistic form of the piece. After being initially inspired to become a silversmith by fellow Dane, Georg Jensen, Fjerdingstad moved to Paris in 1915, where he met Fernand Léger, who encouraged him to exhibit his work at the 1921 Salon d’Automne in Paris. He had great success during this exhibition and was then hired by Christofle as the Head of Design, between 1924 and 1939. He is considered one of the creators of a new style emerging at the time, known as Art Deco. Fully stamped underneath ‘O. Gallia’, as well as the maker’s mark for Christofle. It is also stamped with the model number ‘5885’. Although not an exact science, the hallmarks of this piece help to date it to the early 1930s period (1931-1935). It is also another stamp, ‘Jambert, St. Etienne’, which was probably the retailer or possibly the original owner. We also have another slightly later 1930s example of this model available; they are also available to purchase as a pair. It is in its completely original condition with no damage or restoration to speak of, and wear commensurate with age/use. It could potentially be cleaned and polished if so desired, but we like it as it is. Approximate measurements: 21cm high x 16cm wide x 11cm deep.
