Buchrucker was born in 1897, the son of Bruno Buchrucker, a mathematics teacher. He was the younger brother of Bruno Ernst Buchrucker. Like his brother, he became an officer in the First World War. After 1919, he was stationed in Ludwigsburg as part of the 100,000-strong army. He retired from the army in 1928 and joined Koch
Schenk Chemische Fabrik in Ludwigsburg. At first he worked as a salesman.
When Werkhaus Merz in Ludwigsburg closed down in early 1931, he took on the two employees and set up a 'workshop for artistic metalwork'. He was assisted by his friend Wilhelm Blutbacher. Works from the workshop were exhibited at the Leipzig Spring Fair in the spring of 1931 and at the Grassimesse founded by Richard Graul in the autumn of the same year. Within a few years, the workshop's 'hand-forged' products, made using the silversmith's technique and mainly of pewter, had secured it a firm place among the artistically pioneering manufactories. The company produced functional tableware and sacred objects in the Bauhaus style. Buchrucker won several prizes for his work, including the Grand Prix and a certificate of honour at the Paris World Fair in 1937 and a medal at the First International Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Berlin in 1938, bringing international artistic recognition to the workshop's products. At the beginning of the Second World War, tin was no longer available as the main raw material. Production was therefore switched to brass and copper, and later to aluminium, copper and zinc.
After the Second World War, the workshop was re-established under the name Harald Buchrucker. It was not long before the workshop's products began to win awards. In 1957 and 1960 the workshop was awarded the Baden-Württemberg State Prize. The Bavarian State Prize was added in 1965. The Hessian State Prize followed the following year. As early as 1958, the workshop was awarded a certificate of honour at the World Exhibition in Brussels. At that time the workshop was at its artistic and economic peak in the post-war period.
Due to economic difficulties, the workshop was liquidated at the end of May 1985. Harald Buchrucker died a few months later while on holiday.
Harald Buchrucker was first married to Elfriede Schenk. After the death of his first wife, he married Käthe Carp (1912-2005) from Kassel in 1937.
The couple were also collectors of modern art.
