About the Item
A large and stylish Cotswold Pottery studio pottery jug with incised patterning by renowned potter John Jelfs (British. b.1946) and dating from around 1997. The heavily made stoneware jug is of rounded bulbous shape standing on a flat round unglazed base and with a narrowing pinched neck with a fold back rim and small shaped pouring spout with a small looped handle attached between the body and neck. The body of the jug is divided into panels by simple incised and painted lines with random incised abstract patterning. The body of the jug us decorated in matt brown glazes streaked with gloss tenmoku brown glazes with ‘burnt’ elements in red and black to the top rim and with a glazed interior. The jug has an impressed JJ potters seal marks to the base.
Provenance: from the collection of a private gentleman and originating from the UK art market.
