About the Item
A very stylish and unusual French mid-century organic sculptural lava glazed pitcher by renowned ceramicist Marius Bessone (French, 1929-2001).
Based in Vallauris, an enclave of some of the finest French artisans including Pablo Picasso, Bessone gained a reputation as one of the iconic figures of 20th century French ceramic design. He was born into ceramics and followed a family tradition producing unique and distinctively styled pieces using his favored combinations of textured glazes combined with colorful abstract patterns. His work was exhibited widely and won numerous awards and today has become increasingly collectable.
This earthenware pitcher is certainly striking both in its design and its large size. It has a distinctive sculptural stylised bird form with a small lower body, extended neck and a large, raised beak and crop shaped top. The pitcher is decorated in matt grey lava glazes interspersed with black and brown ‘burnt’ elements. The glaze incorporates unique abstract patterning set in black outline in matt tones of blue, yellow, pink, green and orange with contrasting glossy orange glazed elements. In the style of Pol Chambost the inner pitcher is decorated in bright contrasting yellow glazes. The patterns vary on both sides of the pitcher providing opportunity to alternate the display of the piece. The pitcher is signed Bessone Vallauris to the base.
