About the Item
This is a superb Ironstone Jug or Pitcher made by the English Mason's Ironstone factory, dating to the late Georgian period, circa 1825.
The jug shape and pattern colorway are both rare.
The body is hexagonal in form, having a waisted central section and a flaired wavy rim, with a loop handle having a shaped head to its lower attachment.
The pattern is also rare with the hand enamelled colorful "Yellow Scale Conversation" pattern of oriental figures to the central section, the upper neck and within the inside inner rim. This creamy-yellow scale background colourway is rare as it is usual to see the scale pattern in a red or red-orange colorway. The upper rim and upper handle are also hand gilded.
This jug is unmarked to the base as is sometimes the case but this is definitely a Mason's Jug and we have sold another jug (which had the Masons mark) in this shape and pattern but in the red scale variation. This pattern is fully illustrated on Page 77 of "A Guide to Mason's Ironstone Patterns" published by the Mason's Collectors' Club. We date this piece to the late Georgian period, circa 1825 to 1830.
