A 19th century English Victorian era copper half-gallon ale measure. impressive size, hand-crafted in traditional haystack form with a deep lip and pour spout, small neck, tapering bulbous body on broad base, with a large handle. Vessel body inscribed "Half Gallon", stamped maker's marks, 10, and tax marks to rim interior. circa 1875 The measure was used in taverns to truthfully measure ale or cider to protect society from fraud during trading transactions. With a largely illiterate population at the time, the interests of every citizen needed to be considered and cared for so stamped and sealed measures were used throughout the British Isles.
