About the Item

A delightful and scarce antique Staffordshire pottery character jug wearing a badge I AM ON THE BLACKLIST with date marks for 1906. The American Toby Jug Museum features a similar example and suggests that the label reference refers to the practice of blacklisting people for employment due to their religious, political or other views. A person blacklisted could not find employment and generally became mistrusted and avoided by the public. Further research suggests that the reference may also relate to the drunken nature of the character being unable to return home in this drunken state. Regardless, it is a great social statement piece of the time. The large, hand-crafted jug portrays a drunken red-faced man wearing a scruffy jacket over a partially open waistcoat with a scarf tied around his neck and a distorted hat on his head. He holds his hand on a badge attached to his jacket reading I AM ON THE BLACK LIST. The hat is a formed with a pouring spout and a pouring handle is attached to the back of the jug. The jug has been hand painted, crudely in places and is marked MADE IN ENGLAND with registration marks dating the piece to 1906. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market In good presentable condition with a few minor glaze chips to his cuff and nose and with several firing and making flaws along with painting overlap to the scarf and other elements which are underglaze and appear original.
