About the Item

Exceptional Los Castillo silver-plated pitcher from Taxco, Mexico, featuring a whimsical and artistic design with two applied butterflies—one inlaid with luminous mother of pearl and the other with vibrant abalone shell. The sculptural handle is inlaid with natural malachite stone, adding texture and depth to the polished silver surface. This pitcher retains an early hallmark depicting an Aztec warrior working over an open fire, marked Los Castillo, Plateado, 174. It was acquired directly from the Los Castillo shop in Taxco and has never been used, preserving its original condition. Measurements: Height: 6 in. (15.2 cm) Width with handle: 5.25 in. (13.3 cm) Depth: 4 in. (10.1 cm) The Los Castillo workshop, founded by the Castillo brothers in the mid-20th century, played a pivotal role in the evolution of Mexican silver design. Working alongside master silversmith William Spratling, they helped establish Taxco as the center of modern Mexican silver artistry. Known for their innovative use of stone inlay, mixed metals, and sculptural forms, Los Castillo created pieces that are both functional and highly collectible works of art. This pitcher is a fine example of the studio’s creative exploration, blending modernist form, natural motifs, and rich materials. For collectors of Mexican silver, decorative arts, and design history, it represents an important link to the Taxco silver renaissance. For interior designers, its striking presence and artistry make it an ideal accent piece for luxury interiors, display cabinets, or curated dining spaces. A rare opportunity to acquire an authentic, early-marked Los Castillo pitcher, embodying the innovation and legacy that shaped 20th-century Taxco silver.
