About the Item

A Wedgwood pitcher and tumbler set with a rare majolica colorway of mottled brown with a touch of cobalt blue. This pitcher and tumbler, designed by Wedgwood in 1877, is a unique example of majolica pottery. Most majolica pieces are decorated: adorned with Renaissance-inspired designs, heavily ornamented in the Victorian taste, or covered in Japanese motifs. This pitcher and tumbler, on the other hand, is simply glazed in earth brown and cobalt majolica glazes, making a bold and surprisingly modern visual impact. The set’s simplicity celebrates the technical innovation of majolica glazes. Developed in England in the mid-19th century, the glazes were revolutionary for their vast palette of bright, translucent colors, all of which could be fired at the same time. Dimensions: Pitcher measures 7 in. H x 4 1/4 in. W at widest point Tumbler measures 4 1/4 in. H x 3 in. Dm Condition: Very good. Some faint star-shaped hairlines on bottom of pitcher. Two very faint hairlines to interior of tumbler rim measuring approximately 3 cm and 4 cm, not visible on exterior. Area of glaze wear on bottom rim of tumbler measuring 0.7 cm.
