About the Item

A striking 1950s silver-plated serving tray designed and manufactured by the renowned Los Castillo workshop in Taxco, Guerrero—one of the most influential ateliers in the development of 20th-century Mexican silver design. Handcrafted in solid brass, then silver-plated, the tray features a beautifully hammered surface and an undulating border intricately inlaid with malachite and lapis lazuli, arranged in a fluid interlaced pattern emblematic of Los Castillo’s biomorphic and modernist vocabulary. This tray bears the Los Castillo hallmark: Los Castillo, Taxco, Plateado, Hecho en Mexico, #472, confirming its authenticity and early production. Los Castillo—founded by Antonio, Jorge, and cousins under the mentorship of William Spratling—became a driving force in Taxco’s mid-century silver movement, celebrated for its sculptural forms, mixed-material inlays, and exceptional craftsmanship. Pieces from this period are highly sought after by collectors and widely used by interior designers for elevated tabletop styling and curated display. The tray shows surface scratches, patina, and age-appropriate wear, consistent with its history and handcrafted nature. A quintessential example of mid-century Mexican design.
