About the Item

This impressive charger is a beautiful expression of 18th-century English salt glazed stoneware, a ceramic type that was highly prized in Colonial America. George Washington considered white salt glazed stoneware a refined and practical choice for his table. On September 28, 1757, the first of several shipments from Thomas Knox, his agent in Bristol, was sent to him in Virginia. In a letter dated December 26 of that year, Washington reported that part of the shipment had arrived “incomplete with two things broke,” a testament to how much he valued these imported wares. Made in England circa 1765, this large charger is crisply molded in the Cartouche/Diaper pattern, a bold and sculptural design characteristic of the finest salt glazed wares of the mid-18th century. The clarity of the white body is the result of an innovative blend of calcinated flint and Devonshire clay, which transformed English stoneware by producing a lighter, cleaner surface that set it apart from earlier, darker-bodied pottery. Salt glazed stoneware of this kind was widely used in American colonial households, and archaeological excavations at Colonial Williamsburg have uncovered shards in the Cartouche/Diaper pattern, confirming its popularity in the colonies. Its name comes from the glazing technique—salt was thrown into the kiln during firing, producing a thin, glossy surface with a softly pebbled texture often likened to orange peel.
