About the Item

Tazza Early 17th Century Sharing with you this lovely and unusual tazza on tall, spreading stem with flat, unglazed base. Low cup with flaring rim. Decorated in underglaze blue is a landscape scene very much typical for this period. On the reverse 3 circles. Similar pieces can be found in the porcelain book from the Rijksmusuem and the book about the Witte Leeuw shipwreck ( see pictures). Rijksmuseum puts it in the Kraak section. Tazzas are uncommon but not rare in Dutch collections. Little attention been given to them and Rinaldi does not include this shape among her Kraak porcelain categories. It is true that it does not have the panelled decoration of Kraak porcelain, but otherwise it resembles it in body, firing, glaze and the manner of painting, which is why this piece is included in this section. One variety has the semi-pierced sides also known from bowls. After c.1635 the tazza seems to have been replaced by the taller Transitional stem cup. Perhaps these tazzas are the drinkschaaltjes, ‘saucers to drink from`, which are mentioned in the VOC records of 1609 (Volker). Comparable pieces have been found in the wrecks of the Witte Leeuw (1613).
