About the Item

This is a historically important meat platter made by Chamberlain's Worcester between 1829 and 1837. It has an emerald green ground with floral reserves and the Collar and Medallion of the Brazilian Imperial Order of the Rose with the motto "Amor e Fidelidad". The Chamberlain factory was founded in the 1780s by Robert Chamberlain, who was responsible for the decoration department in the famous Worcester pottery during the Dr Wall period. He set up his own factory with his son Humphrey, initially buying up stock from Turner's Caughley factory for decoration, but then around 1794 starting to produce their own porcelain. By the year 1800 they had built up a strong reputation, producing wonderful tea and dinner ware for the British and European nobility and becoming a mighty competitor of both the Worcester/Flight Barr and Grainger factories. In the 1840s the factory merged back with Worcester, which later also bought Grainger and was formed into the later Royal Worcester. This is a historically important meat platter that would have belonged to a large dinner service. It has a beautiful emerald green ground with flower reserves, filled with fine hand painted English garden flowers. A striking feature is the Collar and Medallion of the Imperial Brazilian Order of the Rose with the motto "Amor e Fidelidad", which means 'Love and Loyalty". The Imperial Order of the Rose is a Brazilian Order of Chivalry instituted by the Emperor Pedro I of Brazil in 1829 to commemorate his marriage to Princess Amelie of Leuchtenberg. It awarded special status and medals to individuals who had given services to the state. In spite of its beautiful motto, this hasn't always happened in an environment of Love and Loyalty; when the Brazilian state deposed the Royal Family in 1889 the order continued as a "house order". But it got more complicated; since that time two surviving factions of royal descendants now dispute the right to be the bearers of the Order. In spite of all this friction the order still continues today and it counts many famous people, Brazilian and otherwise, among its recipients. A large dinner service must have been either purchased or given to the Royal Family not long after the establishment of this order. The platter is marked with the puce printed Chamberlain's Worcester mark including the pre-Victorian British Royal Arms. Although the platter itself is of a style from the 1820s, the fact that the Imperial Order of the Rose was constituted in 1829 and the pre-Victorian Royal Arms were only used until 1837 leads us to believe this platter was decorated some time between 1829 and 1837; possibly for the inauguration of the Order in 1829. Condition report The platter is in excellent condition without damage or repairs, other than an insignificant chip off the foot rim that might have been caused during production. There is some light wear as visible in the pictures. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
