About the Item
Floral Symmetry: Chinese Export Famille Rose Dinnerware:
A Trio of Treasures: Porcelain from the Qianlong Period, Circa 1740
This striking trio of Chinese Export porcelain pieces—a large dish and a pair of plates—dates to approximately 1740, placing them at the height of the Qianlong period. These pieces showcase the intricate artistry of Famille Rose enamels combined with underglaze blue painting, a combination highly prized in 18th-century Europe.
The central design on each piece is a beautifully balanced still life: a blue pot of flowers, a blue bowl holding pomegranates, and a ribbon-tied bouquet featuring delicate pink lotus and white water pods.
The borders are a masterpiece of intricate detailing and varied patterns:
Alternating panels of turquoise enamel containing reserved images of flowers and butterflies.
Pink cell-work patterns enclosing bianco-sopra-bianco reserves (a subtle white-on-white technique).
All patterns are neatly defined by fine black edging.
Historical Context: Trade and Taste
Chinese Export porcelain was specifically manufactured for the Western market, blending traditional Chinese motifs (like the central floral arrangement) with European forms and color palettes. The richness of the Famille Rose palette, utilizing opaque pink and vibrant enamels, was a major innovation that captivated European consumers.
The dish in this set, measuring 13 inches in diameter, is particularly impressive and carries notable provenance. It was once part of a prominent Greater Philadelphia Estate and acquired from the distinguished dealer Matthew
Elisabeth Sharpe Antiques in 1983. The mention of an invisible restored rim chip on the dish, while noted for disclosure, confirms the piece's age and its historical value, which warranted professional conservation.
