About the Item
This is a very decorative Mason's Ironstone pottery small dish or platter produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1815.
The dish or plate is rectangular in section with canted corners and a slightly notched rim edge and stands on a low foot.
This small dish or platter is beautifully decorated in one of Mason's bold chinoiserie patterns, called Peacock Japan which tends to be a rarer pattern. The pattern is richly hand-painted, over-glaze in enamels of cobalt blue, light blue and burnt orange all in varying shades, over a blue transfer printed under-glaze outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 121 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club . The pattern is gilded but the gilding is quite worn from use over 200 years.
The base of the dish has the double line impressed mark "MASON'S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA" which is recorded as being one of the earliest impressed factory marks indicating a date of circa 1813-1820, making this bowl one of the earliest pieces of Mason's, as Ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period.
Overall a very pretty 200 year old dish in a distinctive pattern from the Mason's ironstone factory.
