About the Item

Hand-Painted Tôle Tray with Classical Southern Plantation Scene, Signed K.L. Snead, 1957 ⸻ Description Hand-painted tôle tray featuring a neoclassical Southern plantation house set within a wooded landscape, framed by scrolling gilt foliate decoration on a deep black ground. The central vignette depicts a red-columned mansion with a columned portico, rendered in expressive mid-century brushwork and surrounded by lush greenery. Executed in painted and gilded tin (tôle), the tray has a shaped, scalloped rim and retains its original black lacquered surface with gilt ornament throughout. The underside is signed and dated “H. L. Snead, 1957”, indicating a mid-century American decorative work likely produced as a bespoke or small-batch piece rather than a mass-market example. The surface shows age-appropriate wear, including scratches, scattered paint losses, and patina consistent with use and age, all of which contribute to its authentic vintage character. Structurally sound and visually striking, this tray works equally well as a decorative tabletop object, bar tray, or wall display. A strong example of mid-century American hand-painted toleware with Southern architectural subject matter. ⸻ Details • Material: Painted and gilded tin (tôle) • Technique: Hand-painted • Signed: K.
