About the Item
Rare Mid-Century French Glazed Ceramic Wall Dish “Les Semailles” by Manufacture de Longwy, Glazed by Albert Kirchtetter, 1950s — Limited Edition
This exceptional mid-century French glazed ceramic wall dish was crafted by the renowned Manufacture de Longwy in the 1950s. Part of a limited edition of 200 pieces, this example is numbered 18/200 and bears the iconic Longwy 1950 stamp under the base (see photo).
Titled “Les Semailles” (The Sowing), this rare Longwy ceramic wall plate was glazed by Albert Kirchtetter, one of the atelier’s most skilled decorators. The vibrant, hand-glazed motif celebrates French rural life, with colorful depictions inspired by the rhythms of farming and nature.
Dimensions: Diameter: 37 cm (14.6 in); Height: 4 cm (1.6 in)
Markings: Stamped Longwy 1950, numbered 18/200
Design: Les Semailles — rustic farm scene in bright, enamel glazes
This striking piece perfectly reflects the artistic evolution of postwar French design. In the 1950s, French decorative arts moved away from industrial modernism and returned to craftsmanship, simplicity, and folk tradition, inspired by artists like Jean Touret and the Ateliers de Marolles. Longwy, with its centuries-old expertise in enamel and faience, embraced this shift — producing works that fused traditional artisanal methods with mid-century aesthetics.
Founded in 1798 in Lorraine, the Manufacture de Longwy became one of France’s most important ceramic producers. By the 19th century, under Jean-Auguste Pottier, the factory’s output evolved from utilitarian pottery to highly artistic ceramics, collaborating with renowned designers and artists. Its signature cloisonné enamels and painterly glazes made Longwy a name synonymous with French craftsmanship and artistic innovation.
This mid-century Longwy wall dish is more than a decorative object — it is a testament to the enduring dialogue between tradition and modernity in French design. Ideal for collectors of Longwy ceramics, vintage French pottery, or mid-century decorative arts, it adds depth, history, and authentic French charm to any interior.

The Art Nouveau and Art Deco Periods:
The Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods solidified Longwy’s international reputation. Its pieces, from faience tiles to decorative vases, were highly prized for their original design and refined aesthetics. Notable artists like Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, Gaston d’Audiffret, and Paul Follot played a pivotal role in the company’s success, with Longwy receiving accolades in global exhibitions in Paris, London, and Brussels.
Challenges in the 20th Century:
The 20th century brought significant challenges for the Longwy manufactory, especially during the two World Wars. While production continued, demand waned, and the company faced economic difficulties. By the 1970s, competition and market shifts posed even greater challenges.
Resilience and Revival:
Despite these setbacks, Longwy Ceramic Manufacture has endured and reinvented itself. Today, it continues to produce high-quality ceramics, blending traditional techniques with contemporary designs. Longwy remains a cultural institution, attracting collectors and art enthusiasts, and offering exhibitions and factory tours to showcase its rich history.
Conclusion:
The Longwy Ceramic Manufacture is a testament to the evolution of French ceramic art, transitioning from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, while honoring its artisan roots. Its legacy continues through decorative ceramics that reflect the region’s rich industrial and artisanal heritage, making them highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
