An exceptional set of 12 flat plates (slightly smaller than standard dinner plates), beautifully decorated in a classic chinoiserie style. The entire design was created using the transferware technique, a traditional decorative process developed in Staffordshire, England. The motif was first engraved onto copper plates, then inked and transferred onto a special paper that was applied to the ceramic surface (plates, jugs, trays, tureens, etc.). Once transferred, each plate was hand-painted with remarkable care. The artist skillfully enhanced even the tiniest details, using vibrant, well-balanced colors. The piece was then glazed and kiln-fired. On the back, you'll find the mark of the renowned English manufacturer Minton: a crowned globe framed by laurel, the word "MINTON", the company’s founding date, and “ENGLAND.” Just above the main stamp, a small plow symbol is visible. According to Minton’s date code system used between 1842 and 1942 (see attached photo), this symbol indicates the year of production: 1913. Founded in 1793 by Thomas Minton in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire – the historic heart of England’s ceramic industry – Minton was, for over a century, a symbol of refinement and innovation. A leader in ceramic artistry and design, the company produced exceptional pieces in bone china (the finest English porcelain: translucent yet durable), earthenware, and majolica, along with dinner services, vases, decorative tiles, and ornamental objects. Minton was also renowned for its glazed architectural tiles, widely used in Victorian public buildings. Notably, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, Minton was among the most sought-after suppliers of custom-made tableware for embassies and heads of state. Minton

Pottery is one of the oldest decorative art forms, and Minton is one of its historical masters. For more than 250 years, the English company was a premier producer of porcelain and ceramic wares. Its factory was known for detailed and brightly colored Victorian tableware, including dinner plates and serving pieces.

Thomas Minton founded the Minton factory in 1793 in Stoke-upon-Trent, England. It initially made earthenware but introduced bone china in 1798. When Minton died in 1836, the company passed to his son, Herbert Minton. The younger Minton was a savvy businessman with an eye for design. He introduced glossy majolica earthenware to the factory’s repertoire and hired skilled artists and designers like Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, boosting the company’s reputation.

In 1851, Minton debuted its majolica at the Great Exhibition in London. It became a royal family favorite and was even used to tile the Royal Dairy at Windsor Home Park. Minton majolica was also displayed on the monumental Saint George and the dragon fountain at the 1862 London International Exhibition.

Colin Minton Campbell, a nephew of Herbert Minton, took over the family business in 1858. He led the company to the head of the 1870s English art pottery movement. In the 1890s, French porcelain artist Marc-Louis Solon helped modernize Minton with his Art Nouveau designs.

Minton ceased operating as an independent company when it merged with Royal Doulton Tableware Ltd. in 1968. It was the end of an era, but not the end of widespread appreciation for Minton ceramics.

In 1982, the ”English Majolica” exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum featured 75 Minton pieces. When the Metropolitan Museum of Art reopened its British Galleries in 2020, it included a display of three colorful Minton majolica bird sculptures. Minton pottery was also on display from September 2021 to January 2022, along with other English pottery, at the Bard Graduate Center’s ”Majolica Mania” exhibition.

Lovely and refined English oval ceramic tray; elegant and rich blue decorations have been executed on the white background using the transferware method; the mark on the back tells us exactly that the object was produced by the Clementson Brothers LTD Company between 1901 and 1913 at the Phoenix factory in Shelton, the company made a wide range of objects with this decoration called "Delf" ( see mark no.909 p.150 of "Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Mark"). Transferware, which was very fashionable in the Victorian period, refers to glazed and decorated pottery with a specific treatment that they produced in Staffordshire, England; they used copper plates on which the design was engraved, the plate was then inked and the design transferred to a special fabric that was later placed on the pottery (plates, trays, tureens, etc.) which was glazed and fired; the first to use this printing process were John Sadler and Guy Green of Liverpool in 1756. If we look at the pottery made by this method we will notice that the designs are not perfect and often the ink is smudged: this is their characteristic. A hand-painted plate service could afford few English families, with this method even middle-class families could have a decorated plate service. Elegant and refined English octagonal ceramic tray; on the white background, soft and rich blue decorations have been executed using the transferware method; in the center we find the poetic and graceful representation of the Severn River and the town of Bridgnorth (the name of this decoration is "Severn"), while the edges of the tray are adorned with sumptuous and spectacular flower and leaf decorations. The Severn River is the longest river in the United Kingdom (350 km), rising in Wales and flowing into the Bristol Channel; Bridgnorth is an ancient Saxon settlement; observing the view of the river and town from his castle at Bridgnorth King Charles I Stuart (1600-1649) said "the most beautiful sight in all my kingdom". On the back of the tray there are 3 imprinted marks including one with final number 14, then we find in the center a blue mark, these indicate to us exactly that the tray was produced in Stoke-on-Trent by the Copeland-Spode company in 1914 (see mark no.1079 p.172 of "Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Mark). The Spode firm was founded in the heart of the Potteries - Stoke-on-Trent by Josiah Spode in 1770. Josiah Spode is most famous for developing the specific design technique that meant underglaze transfers could be printed on earthenware.
