About the Item

Important 18th Century French Moustiers Faïence Charger, Clérissy Workshop, “C.V.” Mark Monumental 18th Century French Blue and White Moustiers Faïence Charger, Clérissy Workshop 18th Century French Moustiers Faïence Charger Attributed to the Clérissy Workshop, C.V. Marked A fine and important 18th Century French blue and white faïence charger, attributed to the Clérissy workshop, Moustiers, and bearing the “C.V.” mark on the reverse. This exceptional large-scale charger is hand-crafted and hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware from Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, decorated in rich blue camaïeu. The central circular reserve depicts a dynamic hunting scene (“au bouquetin”), rendered with animated figures, animals, and landscape elements. The composition is inspired by engravings after Antonio Tempesta, whose work profoundly influenced French decorative arts of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The scene is framed by concentric bands of scrollwork and volutes, while the broad wing is adorned with a refined double net and lace (lambrequin) frieze, a hallmark of high-quality Moustiers faïence associated with the Clérissy family workshops. The palette, painterly execution, and monumental scale firmly place this charger within the Louis XIV period aesthetic, reflecting aristocratic tastes for hunting imagery as symbols of power, nobility, and leisure. The presence of the “C.V.” mark further supports the attribution to the Clérissy workshop, one of the most important and influential faïence producers in Moustiers during this period. Signed or initialed examples of chargers of this size are notably rare. Artistic Cultural Significance Moustiers faïence chargers inspired by Antonio Tempesta represent a remarkable fusion of Italian Renaissance graphic art and French ceramic craftsmanship. Tempesta’s engravings—widely circulated throughout Europe—served as essential visual sources for faïenciers, particularly the Clérissy family, who adapted these dramatic compositions into tin-glazed earthenware with extraordinary finesse. Hunting scenes were especially prized by the French nobility, embodying ideals of aristocratic authority and cultivated leisure. Chargers of this scale were often intended for ceremonial display rather than daily use, serving as architectural wall ornaments or buffet centerpieces in grand interiors. Dimensions Diameter: 23.63 in. (60 cm) Height: approx. 1 in. (2.54 cm) Condition: Very good antique condition consistent with age, materials, and use. A minor hairline crack is present at the center of the surface; the charger remains structurally sound and stable. Minor firing imperfections and gentle surface wear are consistent with authentic 18th-century faïence. Please refer to detailed photographs. Summary: This monumental 18th Century French Moustiers faïence charger, attributed to the Clérissy workshop and bearing the “C.V.” mark, is a rare and highly decorative example of early French tin-glazed earthenware. Its scale, subject matter, and documented artistic lineage make it a compelling piece for collectors, decorators, and institutions alike.
