About the Item

Regency Grandeur: Massive 19-Inch Blue White "Chariot" Platter (Liverpool, c. 1810) A magnificent and monumental early 19th-century blue and white transfer-printed serving platter, produced by the Herculaneum Pottery in Liverpool. This piece is a rare and distinct variation of the popular Regency "Greek" pattern, prized for its sheer size and dramatic imagery. The vast central well features a complex, multi-figure frieze encircling a central medallion of leafy vines. The two primary scenes are mythological and dynamic: one depicts winged griffins attacking a figure in a chariot (derived from the ancient wars between the Arimaspi and the Griffins), while the opposing scene shows a triumphal procession of three women in a chariot drawn by five horses. Unlike the Spode version of this pattern (which uses floral borders), the Herculaneum series is distinguished by its bold, geometric Greek Key (Meander) border, punctuated by six oval reserves containing further Neoclassical figures. Markings: Impressed: "8" (Likely a size or potter's tally mark). Attribution: The unique Greek Key border is the definitive signature of the Herculaneum factory's interpretation of this pattern (active 1796–1840). Measurements: Width: 49.53 cm (19 1/2 inches) Depth: 40.64 cm (16 inches) Height: 5.08 cm (2 inches) Historical Context: The "Greek" pattern was the height of fashion during the Greek Revival era. The imagery was directly sourced from the famous publication: "Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton," engraved by Mr. Kirk. These prints introduced the British public to the stark, linear beauty of ancient vase painting, which transfer-printing mimicked perfectly. Provenance: Private New Jersey Collection. (Ref: VM98382)
