AFTER PAUL DE LAMERIE
A VERY RARE PAIR OF GEORGE II GRADUATED CAST SIFTER SPOONS
UNUSUALLY MODELLED IN A SERVING SPOON SIZE
MADE IN LONDON IN 1754/55 BY WILLIAM CRIPPS
The cast Sifter Spoons are the largest we have ever offered and are modelled in the serving spoon size and are graduated. The front of the terminals display lion masks with a shell beneath, all surrounded by trailing foliage. The reverse displays feather decoration either side of a ribbed band. The large circular bowls are pierced with quatrefoils and scroll work. The sifters are of a very good weight and are in excellent condition. The difference in date is simply where the hallmarking year changed in May and one was marked on the last day of the year and the second on the first day of the new year. These magnificent items are modelled in a design after the great Paul De Lamerie. William Cripps was apprentice to the great David Willaume, which would account for the quality of design and production. Cripps became an accomplised craftsman and a versatile exponent of the Rococo style. To judge by his survinging pieces he enjoyed a considerable clientele.
