About the Item

Palm Beach Chic: Dodie Thayer "Lettuce Ware" Leaf Platter Mid-20th Century A quintessential piece of "Palm Beach Chic," this large handcrafted ceramic Trompe L'oeil platter was created by the legendary Dodie Thayer (1926–2018). Known as the "Potter to the Presidents," Thayer's Lettuce Ware became a status symbol in the 1960s and 70s, gracing the tables of style icons like C.Z. Guest, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and the Duchess of Windsor. This substantial serving tray is modeled as a cluster of overlapping, deeply veined lettuce leaves, capturing the organic ruffles and texture of the natural plant. It is finished in Thayer's signature brilliant green glaze—a vivid, translucent emerald hue that varies in depth to accentuate the molding. The piece embodies the breezy, high-society aesthetic of mid-century Florida. Markings: Impressed Mark: The underside bears the authentic impressed pineapple logo and the handwritten text "Au Bon Gout / Palm Beach / Dodie Thayer". Note: This specific mark indicates it was retailed through Au Bon Goût, the famous Worth Avenue boutique that exclusively sold her work to the elite of Palm Beach society. Dimensions:16 3/4 inches wide x 11 1/2 inches deep x 2 inches high Condition: Glaze remains bright and glossy with characteristic depth. Tiny frit to edge- see photo. (NY10974-iprr)
