About the Item
Neoclassical Herculaneum Pottery Large Blue
White "Greek" Pattern Serving Dish,
Circa 1810
A monumental early 19th-century earthenware serving dish (platter) attributed to the Herculaneum Pottery (Liverpool), decorated in the sought-after "Greek" pattern. This impressive piece exemplifies the height of the "Greek Revival" style that swept through English decorative arts following the Napoleonic wars.
Transfer-printed in a rich, dark underglaze blue, the design features a complex series of classical images encircling a central oval medallion filled with a stylized leafy vine. The two primary scenes depict dramatic mythological subjects: one showing winged griffins attacking a figure in a chariot, and the other portraying three women drawn in a chariot by five horses. These dynamic figures are set against a dark blue ground, creating a striking silhouette effect.
The rim is framed by a distinctive border featuring a continuous Greek Key (meander) design interspersed with six oval reserves, each containing unique neoclassical motifs.
Markings: Unmarked. (Attributed to Herculaneum based on paste and pattern characteristics
Condition: Good antique condition. The blue transfer is crisp and dark. A tiny frit (glaze flake) is present at the 6 o'clock position on the rim.
Measurements:
Width: 17 1/8 inches (43.5 cm)
Depth: 13 inches (33.0 cm)
Height: 2 inches (5.1 cm)
Historical Context:
The "Greek" pattern, introduced to the English market around 1806 (most notably by Spode, though copied by others like Herculaneum), catered to the public's voracious appetite for classical antiquity. The imagery was directly sourced from the famous publication Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton, drawn and engraved by Mr. Kirk. These ceramics allowed the middle class to display the "antique taste" advocated by connoisseurs of the Grand Tour.
