About the Item

An Ocean of Elegance: The Wedgwood Nautilus Pearlware Shell Service, Circa 1790 This exquisite Wedgwood Nautilus Pearlware Shell Service, dating to circa 1790, is a remarkable testament to the intersection of natural history and fine art in the late 18th century. Named after its primary inspiration, the nautilus shell, this service is a masterwork of ceramic design, celebrating the natural world with exceptional realism and artistry. Each of the ten pieces in this part service is naturalistically molded in the form of various shells, demonstrating the extraordinary skill of the Wedgwood potters. The pieces are notable for being thinly potted and light in weight, a sign of their outstanding quality. The service's design is a direct reflection of Josiah Wedgwood I's personal fascination with conchology, the study of shells. As an amateur conchologist, Wedgwood confessed to his partner, Thomas Bentley, in 1778, that his passion for shells had become a scholarly pursuit, one that both deepened his enjoyment and created new desires for his collection. This passion translated directly into his ceramic designs. The first pieces of the "Nautilus" service appeared around 1790, and an original drawing for the service, complete with conchological terms, is found in a Wedgwood pattern book with an 1802 watermark. This particular service stands out for its delicate and unusual shades of pink and yellow, a color palette that brings the marine forms to life. The attention to detail is evident in every piece, from the finials of the tureens, which are cleverly formed by a worm cast, to the feet of the tazza and tureens that fit precisely into molded seaweed indents on their stands. The impressed "WEDGWOOD" mark and various letter codes on the pieces authenticate their origin and allow for precise dating. This collection, referenced in significant scholarly works on Wedgwood and held in prestigious collections such as the Dwight and Lucille Beeson Wedgwood Collection, is more than a set of dishes; it is a historical artifact that embodies the aesthetic and intellectual currents of its time. It serves as a beautiful example of how scientific curiosity and artistic genius combined to create enduring works of decorative art. .
