Known as kovsh (or kovsch), this object originated as a small drinking vessel. Craftsmen in Russia have been making kovshes for centuries, often using precious materials such as silver, gold, gems and jewelry. In addition, Russian czars offered them as prestigious gifts to their most loyal supporters.
These objects, made of precious materials and characterized by intricate design, have thus established themselves as genuine pieces of art. In particular, many scholars believe that the term kovsch comes from an ancient Slavic word meaning "cup."
Russian kovsh (or plural kovshi) represent ancient and valuable traditional vessels, similar to ladles or small bowls, oval in shape, with a long handle and sometimes a spout. They were originally used for drinking beverages such as mead; however, over time they were transformed into lavish art objects made of precious metal (silver, gold) and polychrome enamels, such as cloisonné. Today they are considered symbols of status and masterpieces of Russian craftsmanship, often linked to renowned masters such as Fabergé.
Interpretation of individual punches:
• TC (or T.C.): This is the silversmith's (or master silversmith's) mark. it could correspond to several names, but a common identification for the period is Timofey Charitonov active in Moscow.
• A A: These are the initials of the state official who verified the purity of the silver. In this case, the initials "A A" (probably in Cyrillic: А.А.) refer to Anatolij Apollonovič Artamonov (Anatoly Apollonovich Artamonov), Moscow from about 1894 to 1908.
• 1898: This is the exact date when the item was tested and punched by the taster.
• 84: Indicates the title of silver in zolotnik. "84 zolotnik" is equivalent to a purity of 875/1000 (87.5% pure silver), which was the common standard for Russian silver.
• Horse symbol with St. George: This is the mark of the city of Moscow. It depicts St. George slaying the dragon, the city's traditional coat of arms.
