About the Item

Scrolls and Blossoms: A Rare Chinese Export Blue White Dish This large, attractive Chinese Export Porcelain Dish, dating to Circa 1770, is distinguished by its unusual and rarely seen underglaze blue and white design. The dish has a distinctive octagonal shape with gently curved sides. The central well features a composition that appears slightly off-center: The Motif: The design centers on several fabric−covered scrolls and a collector′ s box (likely a scholar's accoutrements), surrounded by a large peony bloom and various stylized leaves and smaller flowering plants, including a butterfly fluttering above. Inner Border: The oval well is framed by a band of repeating waves set at angles, interspersed with scrolling leaves, with larger panels at the top and bottom center. Outer Border: The rim features a dense double border consisting of a row of diaper pattern nearest the edge, followed by a wide band of flowering plants and blossoms. Dimensions: 16 1/4 inches wide x 13 1/4 inches deep x 1 3/4 inches high (41.28cm wide x 33.66cm deep) Condition: A chip has been invisibly repaired at the 4 o'clock position on the rim. Historical Context: Blue and White Porcelain and the Scholar's Aesthetic Underglaze Blue and the China Trade This dish was produced during the peak of the Qianlong Period (1736–1795), a time when Chinese porcelain exports to the West were at their highest. Underglaze blue (cobalt oxide painted directly onto the unfired body before glazing) was the dominant decorative style for export wares, highly valued in Europe for its durability and its resemblance to early, prized porcelain. The Unusual Design While many blue-and-white export wares featured repetitive landscapes (like the Willow Pattern) or European-influenced scenes, this dish carries a motif rooted in the Chinese scholar′s aesthetic: Scrolls and Boxes: The scrolls and collector's box are associated with literati and the Four Accomplishments (painting, calligraphy, music, and chess). Their inclusion here elevates the design from a purely decorative floral arrangement to a scene referencing classical Chinese intellectual pursuits. Auspicious Objects: The peony flower symbolizes wealth and honor, while the butterfly represents long life and joy. The combination of these symbols with scholar's items would have been appealing to Westerners seeking exotic, yet refined, Chinese motifs. The dish's octagonal form and complex borders demonstrate the technical skill of the Jingdezhen kilns in meeting the diverse tastes of the European market with custom, sophisticated designs.
