Set of 12 Belle Époque Cut Glass and Gilt Dessert Plates, circa 1890–1910
6.5 in. diameter x 0.75 in. high
A superb matched service of twelve hand-cut and richly gilded glass dessert plates, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Each plate is meticulously wheel-cut with a central starburst, scalloped and notched rim, and delicately stippled grounds. Over this finely worked surface, lavish bands of gilding form garlands of daisies, pendant swags, and intricate floral borders, creating a luminous interplay of light, cut, and gold.
The plates exemplify the finest traditions of Belle Époque glassmaking, recalling the celebrated workshops of Moser (Bohemia), Baccarat and St. Louis (France), and Josephinenhütte, all of whom produced luxurious gilt-cut wares for fashionable dining rooms around 1885–1910. Such sets were typically commissioned as part of elaborate dessert or ice-cream services, brought out for formal entertaining where gilt crystal signaled refinement, wealth, and modern taste.
At a versatile size of 6.5 inches across, these plates are ideal for pastry, fruit, or salad, while also presenting beautifully as cabinet or display pieces. Their condition is excellent overall, with vivid gilding and crisp cut glass; only minor flea bites consistent with age and use, and no major damage (please refer to photos for details).
