About the Item
A vibrant pair of ceramic serving dishes by Monique Brunner, Vallauris, France, dating from the mid-20th century. This set includes one oval platter and one rectangular platter, each hand-painted with stylized marine motifs rendered in bold reds, oranges, and black, accented with shimmering golden highlights. The dynamic color palette and whimsical underwater imagery capture the joyful spirit of Vallauris ceramics, which flourished in the postwar years as artists sought to blend utility with expressive artistry.
Brunner’s brushwork is both spirited and precise, translating sea life into graphic, decorative forms that feel at once modern and rooted in Mediterranean tradition. The combination of functional form and painterly decoration makes these pieces highly versatile—equally suited as serving dishes for a festive table or as decorative wall displays. For collectors of Vallauris ceramics, they represent the playful, artistic energy of the region and the distinctive hand of Monique Brunner.
