About the Item

A complete and highly refined set of twelve Royal Worcester porcelain cabinet plates, each individually hand-painted by Raymond Rushton (British, fl. early–mid 20th century), one of the factory's leading architectural painters of the wartime and post-war period. Dating to circa 1941, these plates are remarkable examples of Royal Worcester's continued dedication to fine hand decoration even during an era of material shortages and wartime austerity. Executed with soft pastoral nuance and detailed architectural accuracy, each plate is centered with a cathedral rendered in watercolor-like tones, framed by idyllic trees, rivers, and village lanes. The scalloped edges are enriched with hand-applied gilt borders. Each is inscribed to the reverse in sepia enamel with the name of the depicted cathedral and bears the printed Royal Worcester mark in underglaze blue, consistent with 1940s production. All plates are additionally hand-signed by Raymond Rushton, whose painterly command evokes the lineage of Worcester artists such as H.J. Stinton and William Hawkins. Depicted Cathedrals (each identified on verso): Canterbury Cathedral York Cathedral Durham Cathedral Ely Cathedral Lichfield Cathedral St. Paul’s from the River St. Paul’s Cathedral Winchester Cathedral Wells Cathedral Exeter Cathedral Gloucester Cathedral Hereford Cathedral Each cathedral is presented in a luminous natural setting that reflects both topographic sensitivity and romanticism—a hallmark of Rushton’s distinctive hand. The set as a whole forms a visual survey of England’s great ecclesiastical monuments, making it a superb acquisition for collectors of architectural porcelain, cathedral ephemera, or 20th-century Worcester.

12 Royal Doulton “Shakespeare’s Country” Cabinet Plates by J. Hughs C. 1902-22
By Ovington Brother At New York, Royal Doulton
Located in Atlanta, GA
Set of Twelve Royal Doulton “Shakespeare’s Country” Artist-Signed Scenic Plates by J. Hughs, for Ovington Bros., New York, Circa 1902–1922 A rare and complete set of twelve hand-painted cabinet plates by Royal Doulton, produced between 1902 and 1922, each executed in finely detailed enamel and individually signed by the artist J. Hughs, one of the factory’s most accomplished landscape decorators. Commissioned for and retailed by Ovington Bros., New York, this series belongs to the celebrated “Shakespeare’s Country” theme, depicting landmarks and literary sites associated with William Shakespeare and the pastoral beauty of Warwickshire. Each plate is masterfully painted with a distinct English scene—castles, chapels, cottages, bridges, and village landscapes—capturing the romantic vision of early 20th-century England. The painterly approach, with soft-focus skies and layered perspective, reflects the Edwardian taste for sentimental and historicist views, executed here with remarkable skill. The scalloped rims are enriched with elegant raised gilt scrollwork, adding a regal finish to each composition. Titles include: Anne Hathaway’s Cottage...
