About the Item

An early and boldly decorated 93 piece Booths Ironstone China indented shape dinner service, 1813 -1820 in date. The vibrant Victoria pattern depicting both flowers and patterns, printed in underglaze ochre and then hand-painted with iron red, cobalt and finished in gold. The pieces are signed with the red printed "Stone China Victoria Booths England" stamp underneath. Comprising: 13 platters including a turkey platter with draining holes, 49cm and smaller. One large soup tureen with lid, 32cm Two gravy boats with saucers Four vegetable tureens with lids 2 vegetable dishes 14 soup plates 26cm, 40 dinner plates 26cm, 16 side plates 23cm Condition: In excellent condition commensurate for it's age and use. Dimensions in cm: Height 4 x width 53 x depth 49 largest piece Dimensions in inches: Height 2 inches x width 1 foot, 9 inches x depth 1 foot, 7 inches largest piece Ironstone china, ironstone ware or most commonly just ironstone, is a type of vitreous pottery first made in the United Kingdom in the early 19th century. It is often classed as earthenware although in appearance and properties it is similar to fine stoneware. It was developed in the 19th century by potters in Staffordshire, England as a cheaper, mass-produced alternative for porcelain. There is no iron in ironstone; its name is derived from its notable strength and durability Ironstone in Britain's Staffordshire potteries was closely associated with the company founded by Charles James Mason following his patent of 1813, with the name subsequently becoming generic. The strength of Mason's ironstone body enabled the company to produce ornamental objects of considerable size including vestibule vases 1.5 metres high and mantelpieces assembled from several large sections.
